Young Adult Literature: “he was inexplicably drawn to her” is the most boring love story EVER

Can we STOP doing this already? You can’t just throw two characters onto a page and tell me they were “drawn to each other” and bam they’re in love. For romance to work I have to fall in love with both of them and both of them TOGETHER. I have to like both of their personalities and like how those personalities mix. You can’t just put two humans in a situation and tell me that some ELECTRIC TINGLES are the reason they are now IN LOVE FOREVER and willing to give up every single thing that makes up who they are. It is LAZY STORYTELLING. It is BAD WRITING. It makes for INCREDIBLY BORING BOOKS.

Okay listen.

Having a protagonist go through piles of romantic melodrama and nonsense over someone that she has no chemistry with besides “this magnetic pull that draws me to him” is like having a friend go on and on and on and on about her boyfriend, who you’ve met once in passing. After a (very short) while you kind of want to slap the friend and tell her to change topics. THIS is what it feels like to read a book where the bulk of the plot is about their relationship and all we get by way of chemistry is “I don’t know WHY but I just feel DRAWN to this person.”

No. No no NO. Show me why their relationship works or cut the relationship out of the book entirely. I am SICK of this crap being in every single book pick up.

he drinks his favourite tea (NOT PEOPLE!!!!)

he eats a healthy breakfast (still not people)

he takes a walk with his doggies through the forest and finds a little stray kitten that loves him and licks all over his face

he buys the kitten a treat and the doggies a treat (and those treats aren’t people!!!!)

he turns on the news and anderson cooper reports that everyone in the world is having a nice day and there are no murders and to wear warm socks because it’s a little chilly outside

he gets a card from a secret admirer that tells him he has nice hair and isn’t insane and should take care of himself more

he watches a good movie and has a nice bath and drinks wine (not people!)

he goes to bed just a little before normal but not before eating a good batch of ice cream in his favourite fuzzy t-shirt (both of those things are not people)
